BULLYING

MISSION

Respect for the rights, dignity and integrity of others is essential for the well-being of a community. It is our mission that each member of our community shall be free to appropriately express and "be" themselves free from interference, intimidation or disparagement within the educational, social, therapeutic, and recreational environments of our school.

CYBERBULLYING

 

Cyberbullying, is bullying through the use of  technology or elevtronic devices such as telephones, cell phones, computers, and the Internet. It includes, but is not limited to, email, instant messaging, text messages, and Internet postings. See M.G.L. C. 71, 370 for the legal definition of cyber bullying.

DEFINITION

Bullying, as defined in M.G.L. c. 71, 370, is the repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal, or electronic expression or a physical act or gesture or any combination thereof, directed at a target that:

  • causes physical or emotional harm to himself or herself of of damage to the target’s property;

  • places the target in reasonable fear of harm to himself or herself or of damage to this or her property'

  • creates hostile environment at school for target;

  • infringes on the rights of the target at school; or

  • materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of a school.

PROHIBITION AGAINST BULLYING/CYBERBULLYING AND RETALIATION

Valley West School expects that all members of the school community will respect every other member of the community and will treat each other in a civil and appropriate manner. 

 

Retaliation against a person who reports bullying, provides information during an investigation of bullying, or witness or has reliable information about bullying is also prohibited.
